Medicare Supplement

A Medicare Supplement policy (also called a Medicare-Gap policy) pays for services after Medicare. This means your health care bills are paid for by Medicare AND the supplemental policy. There are 10 standard Medicare Supplement plans identified with letters in the alphabet (A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, and N).

A Medicare Supplement plan fills in the gaps that Medicare does not cover. With a Medicare Supplement policy your drug coverage will always be a separate policy.

Typically, a Medicare Supplement policy has higher premiums but lower out of pocket costs when you go to the doctor or hospital than a Medicare Advantage plan. The chart below shows the 10 Medicare Supplement plans available to you and the benefits included in each:

*Plan F also has an option called a high deductible Plan F. This high deductible plan pays the same benefits as Plan F after one has paid a calendar year $2000 deductible. Benefits from high deductible Plan F will not begin until out-of-pocket expenses exceed $2000. Out-of-pocket expenses for this deductible are expenses that would ordinarily be paid by the policy/certificate. These expenses include the Medicare deductibles for Part A and Part B, but do not include the plans’ separate foreign travel emergency deductible.
